A mini rainfall simulator that measures the relative susceptibility of soil to erosion by applying standardized artificial rainfall.
Erosion susceptibility is a difficult parameter to measure since absolute values cannot be obtained. However, a reasonable indicator can be achieved through relative measurement, for which a rainfall simulator can be used.
With the rainfall simulator, the surface runoff and soil loss caused by a standardized rain shower over a plot of standard surface area are measured. The duration, intensity and kinetic energy of the shower are calibrated so that test results show high sensitivity to differences in soil properties.
The extent to which soil is susceptible to erosion depends largely on its composition. Knowing this susceptibility is important for the development of a given plot.
