The hydrometer method is a precise way to determine the grain-size distribution in a soil sample. This kit is a complete set for analysing the smallest fractions in soil samples.
In the hydrometer method, the sample is first freed of organic matter. It is then weighed, dried, suspended in water, and sieved.
The solution that passes through the sieve is transferred to a measuring cylinder filled with water. Hydrometer readings are taken at set intervals; together with settling time, these readings are used to determine particle sizes according to Stokes' Law.
Set Contents
The hydrometer kit is used to analyse the finer fractions of soil samples. For a complete grain-size analysis, the Sieve Set is also needed for coarse fractions, along with the Pipette Apparatus for fractions below 38 microns.
