A corer that operates on the free-fall principle for sediment sampling in waters deeper than 30 metres.
The free-fall corer consists of a frame, a falling weight and a sampler. The sampler is designed specifically to take samples at depths greater than 30 metres (98.4 ft). The sampler is released into free fall using a davit on the boat. Under its own weight and the speed it gains, the instrument penetrates the underwater bed.
Semi-disturbed samples can be obtained from the top layer of underwater sediment. Penetration depth depends partly on the composition of the material. In mud-rich beds penetration reaches approximately 80 cm, while in sandier material it reaches approximately 30 cm. The system is fitted with a check-valve above the sampler, so no water remains on top of the sample and the sample stays in place.
The free-fall corer is not suitable for rocky beds; unconsolidated materials may not stay in place.
